What are Nakshatras? The 27 lunar mansions explained.

Nakshatras (Sanskrit · "lunar mansions") are the 27 segments of the zodiac that Vedic astrology uses to resolve the Moon's position finer than the 12 signs. Each Nakshatra spans 13°20' of the zodiac (360° ÷ 27). Each is ruled by one of 9 planets in a fixed cycle. Your birth Moon's Nakshatra determines your starting Mahadasha — making Nakshatras the foundation of the entire 120-year Vimshottari timing system.

The 27 Nakshatras grouped by ruling planet.

The 9 planet rulers cycle 3 times across the 27 Nakshatras in the fixed Vimshottari order:

Why Nakshatras matter more than signs in Vedic.

  • Finer resolution · 27 Nakshatras × 4 padas = 108 segments vs 12 signs · 9× more granular than sun-sign astrology.
  • Dasha foundation · the entire Vimshottari 120-year timing system is computed from your birth Moon's Nakshatra · Western has no equivalent.
  • Personality precision · classical texts (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra · Saravali · Dennis Harness The Nakshatras) document each Nakshatra's deity, animal, guna, yoni, and personality signature.
  • Compatibility (Yoni Kuta) · 8 of the 36 Ashtakoot compatibility points come from the two charts' Nakshatra-based yoni (animal) interaction.
  • Muhurta (electional) · choosing auspicious times for events uses the active Nakshatra and its compatibility with the chart of the person performing the action.

Common questions.

What are Nakshatras?

Nakshatras (Sanskrit · "lunar mansions") are the 27 segments of the zodiac that Vedic astrology uses to resolve the Moon's position finer than the 12 signs. Each Nakshatra spans 13°20' of the zodiac (360° ÷ 27). Vedic astrology uses Nakshatras alongside signs to read personality, decision style, and — critically — the Vimshottari Dasha timing system, which is computed from your birth Moon's Nakshatra.

Why 27 Nakshatras and not 28?

Classical Vedic uses 27 Nakshatras (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra · Phaladeepika). Some ancient texts mention a 28th Nakshatra called Abhijit, but modern Vedic astrology generally treats Abhijit as a special-case intercalary Nakshatra and uses the 27-Nakshatra system for Dasha computation. Fliyp follows the standard 27-Nakshatra Vimshottari convention.

How does my Nakshatra affect my Dasha?

The Nakshatra your Moon occupied at birth determines your starting Mahadasha. Each Nakshatra has a ruling planet (in a fixed 9-planet cycle: Ketu · Venus · Sun · Moon · Mars · Rahu · Jupiter · Saturn · Mercury · repeating 3 times to cover 27). The ruling planet of your birth Moon's Nakshatra is your first Dasha — and from there the 120-year Vimshottari cycle proceeds in fixed order.

What are Padas?

Each Nakshatra is further divided into 4 Padas (quarters), each spanning 3°20'. Padas finer-grained the Nakshatra's expression and align it with the 12 signs (since 27 × 4 = 108 padas = 12 signs × 9 padas-per-sign). Your specific pada within your Moon's Nakshatra adds another layer of personality + Navamsa-chart precision.

Is my Nakshatra more important than my Sun sign?

In Vedic astrology, yes — your Moon sign and Moon's Nakshatra are more important than your Sun sign (Western astrology inverts this priority). Your Moon governs your emotional core, your decision style, and your Dasha sequence. Most Vedic readings start with: what Moon sign + what Nakshatra + what active Mahadasha.

Can I read my Nakshatra alone?

Yes — each Nakshatra has a primary deity, an animal symbol, a guna (sattva/rajas/tamas quality), a varna (caste), a yoni (animal · for compatibility), and themes the chart-tradition associates with it. But the full reading requires your Nakshatra in context — your sign placement, your ruling planet's placement, and your active Dasha period.
