What is Mahadasha? The 120-year Vimshottari Dasha system.
Mahadasha (great period) is the Vedic concept of major planetary life-chapters. The Vimshottari Dasha system divides your life into 9 chapters across 120 years, each ruled by one of the 9 grahas (planets). Your starting chapter is determined by your birth Moon's Nakshatra. The Mahadasha does NOT predict events — it sets the structural weather your decisions get made in. This is the timing layer Vedic astrology specifically owns · Western astrology has no equivalent.
The 9 Mahadasha chapters (in fixed order).
| Planet | Years | Themes |
|---|---|---|
| Ketu | 7 | Detachment · spiritual seeking · letting go |
| Venus | 20 | Pleasure · partnership · arts · accumulation |
| Sun | 6 | Authority · visibility · self-actualisation |
| Moon | 10 | Emotion · home · public · nurturing |
| Mars | 7 | Action · courage · physical · conflict |
| Rahu | 18 | Ambition · foreign · obsession · breakthrough |
| Jupiter | 16 | Expansion · wisdom · faith · meaning |
| Saturn | 19 | Consolidation · discipline · structure · maturity |
| Mercury | 17 | Communication · commerce · learning · skill |
| Total | 120 years |
Three levels of timing precision.
- Mahadasha (great period) · the 9 major chapters above · 6-20 years each · sets the structural era.
- Antardasha (sub-period) · further subdivides each Mahadasha into the same 9 planets, proportionally · months to years each · refines the era's theme.
- Pratyantar (sub-sub-period) · the 3rd-level subdivision · weeks to months each · for finest-grained timing decisions.
All three levels are computed by Fliyp from your birth Moon's Nakshatra · precise to the day · per the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra Vimshottari computational rules.
Common questions.
What is Mahadasha?
Mahadasha (Sanskrit · "great period") is the Vedic astrology concept of major planetary life-periods. The Vimshottari Dasha system — the most widely-used Vedic timing framework — divides your life into 9 Mahadasha chapters totalling 120 years, each ruled by a different planet. Which planet rules the current chapter shapes the structural themes of that period.
How is my Mahadasha calculated?
Your starting Mahadasha is determined by your birth Moon's Nakshatra (one of 27 lunar mansions). Each Nakshatra has a ruling planet, and that planet's Dasha is the chapter you began life in. From there, the 9 Mahadashas cycle in a fixed order: Ketu (7y) → Venus (20y) → Sun (6y) → Moon (10y) → Mars (7y) → Rahu (18y) → Jupiter (16y) → Saturn (19y) → Mercury (17y) = 120 years total.
What is an Antardasha?
An Antardasha (sub-period) is the further subdivision of a Mahadasha by the same 9 planets in the same fixed order, but proportionally. So inside a Jupiter Mahadasha (16 years) you have Jupiter-Jupiter Antardasha, Jupiter-Saturn Antardasha, Jupiter-Mercury Antardasha, etc. Each Antardasha has its own theme within the broader Mahadasha chapter. Pratyantar (sub-sub-periods) divide further still.
What does my current Mahadasha mean for me?
It tells you what kind of chapter your life is structurally in. A Saturn Mahadasha rewards institution-building, discipline, and patient consolidation; it punishes high-velocity gambles. A Jupiter Mahadasha rewards expansion, meaning, and faith-based growth; it punishes playing small. The Mahadasha does not predict events — it sets the structural weather your decisions get made in.
Are Mahadasha periods predictive?
They are predictive of *what kind* of opportunities and risks are structurally available · not of specific events. The Vimshottari system is timing-frame astrology · the events inside the frame are shaped by your free-will decisions. Why doesn't Western astrology have Mahadasha?
Western astrology focuses on natal placements + transits (current planetary positions vs your fixed chart). It does not have a planetary-life-period system equivalent to Vimshottari Dasha. This is the single biggest structural difference and the reason Fliyp uses Vedic — for timing intelligence (when to act · what chapter you are in) the Dasha layer is essential, and Western has no equivalent.
