What Is Compatibility? How Fliyp Calculates Relationship Compatibility from Two Birth Charts

Fliyp's Compatibility feature computes a multi-layer relationship compatibility score using both people's complete birth charts — Moon nakshatras, ascendants, Venus placements, 7th house configurations, and the Ashtakoot matching system. It is the most complete Vedic compatibility analysis available.

What Is Compatibility?

Compatibility is Fliyp's relationship analysis feature — a multi-layer compatibility calculation using both people's complete Vedic birth charts. It goes far beyond simple sun sign compatibility ("Are Leos and Scorpios compatible?") to calculate the specific quality of connection between two unique individuals at the level of mind, energy, values, life direction, and long-term structural alignment.

The output is a Compatibility Score (0–100) built from six distinct analytical layers, each measuring a different dimension of how two charts interact. A high Compatibility Score means the two charts are fundamentally supportive of each other across most dimensions. A low score identifies where specific incompatibilities exist — not to rule out the relationship, but to understand which dynamics will require the most conscious work.

Why Sun Sign Compatibility Is Not Enough

"Leos and Aquarians are incompatible" — this kind of statement is the dominant form of popular astrological compatibility analysis. It uses one planet (the Sun) and one characteristic (sun sign opposition) to make a blanket statement about the compatibility of two people.

The problems with this approach:

The Sun is not the primary relationship planet. Relationship compatibility in Vedic astrology is governed primarily by the Moon (emotional resonance), Venus (values and pleasure compatibility), and the 7th house (partnership structure). The Sun matters — but it is the identity layer, not the relational layer.

Opposition does not mean incompatibility. In Vedic astrology, some of the most powerful and durable partnerships involve specific oppositions — the nodal axis (Rahu-Ketu) creates magnetic, fated attraction; 7th house oppositions create complementary polarity. Opposition is not simple incompatibility.

Two people's charts interact in dozens of ways simultaneously. The Moon's nakshatra compatibility with the partner's Moon nakshatra, the ascendant compatibility, the 7th house lord's dignity and relationship to the partner's chart, Venus sign compatibility, Mars compatibility (especially for male energy dynamics) — all of these interact simultaneously. Reducing compatibility to sun sign comparison misses 95% of the relevant information.

Fliyp's Compatibility feature calculates all of these layers and integrates them into a complete picture.

The Six Compatibility Layers

Layer 1 — Moon Nakshatra Compatibility (Ashtakoot / Guna Milan)

The most foundational Vedic compatibility calculation is Ashtakoot Guna Milan — the eight-factor matching system that compares both people's Moon nakshatras across eight dimensions. This system assigns points (gunas) to each match, with a maximum of 36 total gunas. Traditional Vedic marriage astrology requires a minimum of 18 gunas for compatibility; 28+ is considered excellent.

The eight factors (kootas) measure:

| Koota | Points | What It Measures | |-------|--------|-----------------| | Varna | 1 | Spiritual compatibility and growth trajectory | | Vashya | 2 | Natural influence and control dynamics | | Tara | 3 | Health, wellbeing, and fortune compatibility | | Yoni | 4 | Physical and intimate compatibility | | Graha Maitri | 5 | Mental and intellectual compatibility | | Gana | 6 | Temperament and fundamental nature match | | Bhakoot | 7 | Family harmony and overall life direction alignment | | Nadi | 8 | Health genetics and progeny compatibility |

Nadi carries the highest weight (8 points) because it relates to fundamental constitutional compatibility — specifically the energy channel (nadi) each person's Moon occupies. Nadi incompatibility (Nadi Dosha) is the most serious flag in traditional Vedic compatibility.

Fliyp calculates the full Ashtakoot score for any two birth charts and shows the point-by-point breakdown.

Layer 2 — Ascendant Compatibility

Ascendant compatibility assesses how the two people's self-presentation styles and life approaches interact:

Complementary ascendants: Certain pairs of ascendants naturally support each other — their approaches to life are complementary rather than competing. A Taurus ascendant's stability complements a Gemini ascendant's adaptability; a Scorpio ascendant's depth complements a Cancer ascendant's nurturing.

Trine ascendants (same element): Ascendants in the same element (Aries-Leo-Sagittarius fire trines, Taurus-Virgo-Capricorn earth trines, Gemini-Libra-Aquarius air trines, Cancer-Scorpio-Pisces water trines) share fundamental life orientation — they approach the world from the same elemental quality, producing natural understanding.

Challenging ascendant pairs: Certain ascendant combinations create persistent friction in daily interaction — not because the people are fundamentally incompatible, but because their default approaches to situations are naturally discordant and require conscious bridging.

Layer 3 — Venus Compatibility

Venus governs what each person values, how they experience pleasure, and what they seek in partnership. Venus compatibility measures how well the two people's value systems and pleasure orientations align:

  • Do both Venus signs naturally enjoy similar types of experiences?
  • Is there a complementary or conflicting dynamic between their pleasure orientations?
  • Does either person's Venus form a tense aspect with the other's relationship-relevant planets?

Venus in Taurus paired with Venus in Scorpio creates intense magnetic attraction with an undercurrent of value-conflict — Taurus Venus seeks security and material stability; Scorpio Venus seeks depth and transformation. Venus in Gemini paired with Venus in Aquarius creates natural intellectual and social resonance — both seek mental stimulation and freedom in partnership.

Layer 4 — 7th House Analysis

The 7th house is the house of partnerships, marriage, and committed relationships. Compatibility analyzes the 7th house configuration for both people:

7th house lord dignity: A strong 7th house lord (well-dignified in the natal chart) indicates a natural capacity for fulfilling partnership. A weak 7th house lord may indicate challenges in commitment or relationship satisfaction that need conscious work.

Planets in the 7th house: Benefics (Jupiter, Venus) in the 7th house support partnership naturally. Malefics (Saturn, Mars, Rahu) in the 7th house create specific dynamics — Saturn delays and tests partnership, Mars creates conflict but also passion, Rahu creates intensity and sometimes unconventional relationship structures.

Mangal Dosha check: When Mars is in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house in either person's chart, Mangal Dosha is present. Traditional Vedic astrology considers Mangal Dosha significant for marriage compatibility — when one person has it and the other does not, it creates an imbalance. Fliyp flags Mangal Dosha status for both charts.

Layer 5 — Moon Sign Compatibility

Beyond the nakshatra-level Ashtakoot calculation, Fliyp also assesses Moon sign compatibility — the emotional resonance between the two people's Moon signs:

  • Do the Moon signs share the same element (natural understanding)?
  • Are they in trine (120° relationship — compatible flow)?
  • Are they in 6-8 position (challenging but transformative dynamic)?
  • Are they in 2-12 position (one-sidedness risk in the relationship)?

The Moon sign compatibility layer looks at the emotional communication dynamic — how naturally the two people's emotional expressions meet and how much effort is required to bridge their emotional styles.

Layer 6 — Dasha Period Alignment

This is a temporal compatibility factor that generic compatibility tools do not include: are both people currently in dasha periods that support partnership, or do their current dasha periods create conflicting priorities?

A person in a Venus Mahadasha (prioritising relationships and pleasure) is more naturally oriented toward relationship investment than a person in a Saturn Mahadasha (prioritising discipline and individual karmic processing). Knowing the dasha alignment helps explain why two well-matched charts may be at different relationship readiness points at a given time.

The Compatibility Score: What It Means

| Score Range | Compatibility Quality | |------------|----------------------| | 80–100 | Exceptional — strong alignment across most dimensions. Natural resonance, low friction, high mutual support. | | 65–79 | Strong — good compatibility with specific areas that require attention. Most dimensions align well. | | 50–64 | Moderate — meaningful connection with notable differences in specific dimensions. Works with conscious effort. | | 35–49 | Challenging — significant incompatibilities in one or more major dimensions. Requires substantial mutual adaptation. | | Below 35 | Difficult — fundamental incompatibilities in core dimensions. Can work, but demands exceptional self-awareness from both people. |

Important: Compatibility Score is not a relationship verdict. Many extraordinary relationships have moderate or even challenging scores — because conscious love, shared values, and intentional partnership can bridge astrological incompatibilities. The score identifies where the natural friction is, so both people can understand it rather than be surprised by it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can a high Compatibility Score guarantee a successful relationship? No. Compatibility Score measures astrological alignment — the natural ease or difficulty of the planetary interaction between two charts. Relationship success depends on choices, communication, shared values, life circumstances, and individual self-awareness. High compatibility creates favourable conditions; it does not determine outcomes.

Q: What is a "good" Compatibility Score? In traditional Vedic astrology, 18+ Ashtakoot gunas (out of 36) is the minimum threshold for marriage compatibility. Fliyp's overall Compatibility Score of 60+ represents a solid foundation. Scores above 75 indicate strong natural alignment. Below 40 warrants careful reflection about which specific dimensions are creating the incompatibility.

Q: My partner and I have very different sun signs. Does that mean we're incompatible? Sun sign compatibility is only one small factor in the complete picture — and not the most important one. Fliyp's Compatibility analysis can show that two apparently "incompatible" sun signs have excellent Moon nakshatra resonance, complementary ascendants, and well-aligned Venus placements — producing high overall compatibility despite sun sign difference.

Q: Can Compatibility be checked for friendships or business partnerships? Yes — though some factors (like Nadi, which relates to marriage and progeny) are less relevant. The Moon nakshatra resonance, ascendant compatibility, Mercury compatibility (for business), and 11th house analysis (for friendship and professional networks) are all applicable to non-romantic relationships.

Q: What is Mangal Dosha and should I be worried about it? Mangal Dosha (Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house) is a traditional Vedic compatibility consideration. Its severity is often overstated in popular astrology. When both partners have Mangal Dosha, it is considered cancelled. A strong, well-aspected Mars even in a "dosha" house produces different effects than a weak, afflicted Mars. Fliyp provides context rather than alarm for Mangal Dosha flags.
